The Kuleshov Effect

The Kuleshov Effect is where viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. In simpler terms, two shots work together to create an overall meaning.

I observed this in To All the Boys I've Loved Before (can you tell by now that this is one of my favorite movies) where it shows Josh entering the house, then we see Lara Jean looking fond. Through these two shots, we can conclude Lara Jean has feelings for Josh without the movie ever blatantly saying it. This is an effect I previously said I wanted to include in my film and I do end up using it.

Within the first dream sequence, I have the same kind of effect the Lara Jean-Josh interaction had; interpreting that a character likes another character. In the clip, Elena is shown as the first clip, then the next shot is of Maddie (playing Lucy) looking fondly at her. This sequence of shots helps set up the tone of this film as a romance as we see this love story unfold from the very beginning.
